Atomic RPG System FAQs

Atomic RPG General Questions

At the bare minimum you will need two people. One to be the Game Master, or GM. The other to be a player character, or PC.

For the best experience playing Atomic we recommend 6 total players. One person acting as the GM and 5 other friends who are player characters. This way when there are decisions to be made there is an odd number of players, so votes are simple. Also, this is just about the right amount of people to help and aid each other without the confusion of too many players trying to do to much.

The Atomic RPG System is specifically designed to force inter player dependence. No single player character should be able to tackle all obstacles. Only through teamwork will a Atomic group dominate all situations. Only through teamwork will a Atomic group achieve the optimal role play experience that all gamers hope to achieve.

It can be fun, once in awhile, to have large Atomic gaming sessions of 10 to twelve people. Though we caution against regular gaming groups of this size as it is often far too confusing and takes too long to do much of anything. If you have a group of this size that wants to play Atomic, we suggest splitting it into two separate groups.

First and foremost you are going to need AtomicRPG.com. This website is your portal into all of the rules, mechanics, ideas, and fun for the Atomic RPG System.

Next, you will need a few friends to play the Atomic RPG System with you.

Some pencils and paper to write down all of the important things about your character. You can use some of the more advanced and helpful Atomic RPG System Tools on this AtomicRPG.com.

You may also want to have a set of dice to play Atomic. Dice add a bit of randomness and the excitement of chance to the Atomic RPG System. If you don’t have a set of dice yet you can use the Atomic RPG System Random Die Roller, created specifically for the Atomic RPG System.

That’s all you need to play the Atomic RPG System system!

The Game Master, also known as the GM, is the player in the Atomic RPG System that will be controlling the game and moderating the action for the other players. The GM is tells the story and controls the non player characters during a Atomic RPG System game.

Look into the Game Master section for further details about what role a GM plays in the Atomic RPG System system.

A non player character is any character that is controlled by the Game Master. These range from the characters that the party may interact with to the monsters that they fight.

A player character is the character that you will be controlling in the Atomic RPG System. It is the avatar that you will control during all parts of the game.

A role-playing game (RPG and sometimes roleplaying game) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development. Actions taken within many games succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines such as the Atomic RPG System.

The Atomic RPG System, or Atomic RPG System, is a role play gaming system designed to be adaptable to any genre, gaming style, gaming system, and more. It is meant to be the one and only core mechanic system you and your RPG group use to play any game you would like.

See our detailed description here: What is the Atomic RPG System?

If you have more questions that the FAQ doesn’t answer, feel free to stop by our forums and ask any questions you like there.

The Atomic RPG System is a d20 system. Players will use a twenty sided die (d20) to determine success in things such as attacking and skill checks.

In the Atomic RPG System higher numbers (stats) are better than lower ones. Atomic RPG System character stats will added to modify the d20 roll. Success or failure are determined by a specific number which is set by either the stats of a challenger or by the Game Master(GM).

Rolling the target number or higher equals success. Rolling below the target number is a failure.

No it doesn’t. You will continue to have all of the characters and other custom Atomic RPG System content you have created.

The account will however lose the ability to edit the older characters and other custom Atomic RPG System content. The most recently modified content will be what is still available to edit. In most cases this will work well since the most recently updated characters should be the ones your are actively playing.

Here is an example of how it works. With an upgraded account 10 characters where created at 1 a month.  Starting with character A in January and ending with character J in October. In November you decide to downgrade your account. The character limit on the account will change from 10 to 5.

This means the following characters will still be available to be edited and modified. (most recently updated/created)

  1. Character J (Created and updated in October)
  2. Character I (Created and updated in September)
  3. Character H (Created and updated in August)
  4. Character G (Created and updated in July)
  5. Character F (Created and updated in June)

This means the following characters will not be able to be edited and modified. However, they still will be able to be viewed and used. It will just not be able to be modified.

  1. Character E (Created and updated in May)
  2. Character D (Created and updated in April)
  3. Character C (Created and updated in March)
  4. Character B (Created and updated in February)
  5. Character A (Created and updated in January)

If for any reason you would like one of character A – E to be modified instead of Character F simply modify the character you would like to have instead. It will then appear at the top of the list. To be sure of the 5 characters you would like to be able to modify make sure to modify them prior to downgrading your account. This will make them a priority to keep on the top of the list.

This works the same way with all Atomic RPG System custom content and account limits. (Powers, Items, etc)

Upgrading your account to have a higher limit will allow the characters to be edited again. The characters can also be deleted to make room on your account.

Room can also be created by contributing the content through the Atomic RPG System submission system. Contribute enough content and you can earn extra room on your account as well!

For further questions or clarifications please post on the Atomic RPG System Forums and we will be happy to help you out.

Character Creation

As a general Atomic RPG System rule, players can adjust their characters when they level up. This means players can change aspects of their character on top of the normal changes that come with leveling. This helps players adjust their characters continuously. Players can easily adapt to the game they are playing or to changes their characters as they evolve. When players make changes to their characters they should be limited to one thing per level. This would include; Traits, Archetype, Style, Focus, Specialty, Skills, One Discipline.

This is to show growth and flexibility so characters do not completely change when they level. However, the GM has final say on what any player can change.

As far as Powers themselves are concerned. GM’s are encouraged to allow players to adjust and change Powers during any Full Rest if they feel they need to.

However, final say on any character is always up to your RPG groups GM.

Power Points are the number of points any particular character has to use to create the Powers and abilities of the character.

Each character Focus has a different ratio of Power Points that will be available for that particular character. Balanced characters have the most Power Points, but their maximum they can use per Power is the lowest. Focused characters have a medium amount of Power Points, their maximum they can use per Power is in the mid range. Devoted characters have the fewest Power Points, but their maximum they can use per Power is the highest.

Power Points can be further modified through character Traits, Specialties, Atomic Items, and even special GM modifications to a character.

Character Tier represents a broad group that all character fit into. This group represents a tier of general strength of a character to other characters.

  • Character Tiers represent a general strength of a character. Where as Character Levels represent the specific strength of a character.
  • Character Tiers are also in many game situations where a bonus or penalty is applied.
  • Character Tiers are heavily used in calculating a character’s overall statistics.
  • A Character’s Tier limits the strength of the items they can use.
  • A Character’s Tier limits the strength of the Powers they can wield.
  • Character Tiers advance every 4 Character Levels.
    • Character Tier 1 = Character Level 1
    • Character Tier 2 = Character Level 5
    • Character Tier 3 = Character Level 9
    • Character Tier 4 = Character Level 13
    • Character Tier 5 = Character Level 17
    • And so on.

A Move in the Atomic RPG System is used during Battle Time. It is the micro movement of a character when every motion counts. Characters can also exceed their weight limits with Athletic Skill checks for a Move. For more information on this please visit Battle Time.

Traveling in the Atomic RPG System is used during Turn Time or Real Time. This is when a character is going from one place to another but the precise Space where the character is, is not necessary. Characters can not exceed their weight limits with Athletic Skill checks for Traveling. The character will have to reduce their carried weight in order to Travel. For more information on this please visit Long Distance Travel.

Combat

Yes.

A character can use a Combat Maneuver or Power to force another character off a ledge. This must move the character into the space past the edge of the ledge. At that point both characters should roll a Reaction check. If the character that is being pushed off wins, they finish the move at the ledge, just dodging the fall. If the character that is pushing the other off wins, then the character falls. See the Athletics skill for details about falling.

The Reaction check is made whether it is a Move or Teleport with the results being the same.

This extra rule is in place to eliminate the ability to easily remove a character from game play. Everyone should be able to play Atomic all of the time. They might be at a disadvantage clinging to the cliff face 2 rounds down the ledge, but they are still in the game playing. This is much more fun. That is what the Atomic RPG System focuses on.

No it can not. You can only affect a target with a Power one time during a turn.

Example

A player character uses a power that can affect 4 targets within 4 spaces. There are only two targets within 4 spaces of the player character. Only these two targets can be affected. Each target will only be affected by the Power effects one time. They can not be affected twice due to the Power having more targets than can be hit at the time.

Categories: Combat, Powers

No.

Forcing another character into an obstacle does not cause damage. The Move would stop where the obstacle is.

However, an Advanced Atomic Power can have both a Move and Damage component.

Keep in mind that a character can only Move by means of its normal Movement type. A character that has Ground Movement can only move things by Ground Movement. The character cannot be Move something into the air. This would require the character had a Movement of Fly. A Power could be created to give the Movement type of Fly and then have a Move effect added to it.

Category: Combat

When you use a Power with multiple targets you will make only one Attack roll. The result of the roll will be the Defense that your Attack hist. You will compare this number to the Defenses of the targets that you attacked. If the number is equal to or greater to Defense of the target then the Power will affect that target.

This method of determining hits and misses speeds a Atomic game up dramatically.

Example

A player character uses a Power that can has the ability to affect 3 targets. The player character rolls an Attack roll. The result of this roll is an 18. Now you compare this 18 to the targets Defenses. There are two with a defense of 15, which hit. The third targets defense is 22 which misses. This Power will affect 2 of the 3 targets.

A Atomic RPG System Disposable Item is an item that the character will consume, or otherwise use to achieve a temporary effect. These are often potions, herbs, or other things a character will actually ingest to gain some benefit. Disposable Items can also be things like a grenade which is meant to affect enemies. In either case these Disposable Items are used up and destroyed.

For more information see the official Atomic RPG System Page on Disposable Items.

All members of the Atomic RPG System need to have a Atomic RPG System account created. Unlike many websites that use Facebook just to validate users, AtomicRPG.com needs to have a Atomic RPG System account built so it knows who your PCs, NPCs, Powers, and Items belong to. All of this information is stored on AtomicRPG.com so all members can have their own set of custom Atomic RPG System goodies. This also keeps track of your Atomic Friends, submission rewards, etc.

Once the account is created members can link their Facebook accounts to their AtomicRPG.com account. This is nice so members do not have to remember another websites username/password. If a member is logged into Facebook, they will also be logged into the AtomicRPG.com. There are a few other social network options that are also available for your convenience.

AtomicRPG.com does not use these linked accounts for anything other than verifying the user matches the AtomicRPG.com account.

The Nickname in your profile determines what name will be displayed publically on AtomicRPG.com. This can be selected in your profile as the Display Name. Some things that may show this public name are forum posts and content creation references.

It is a good idea to use a Nickname for your Display Name on your account for a couple reasons.

  1. To increase security for your account.
  2. In case you used an email address for your login name. (Bots scan the internet for emails to send spam to.) This can help avoid unwanted emails.
  3. If the name you wanted for your account was taken. This way you can display the name you want and still have a unique login username.

When an account is created the Username is used as the Nickname. However, they do not have to be the same. Simply go to your Profile. This is found on the right side on the screen in the widget that allows you to access your account. Or it can be located in the menu under Atomic RPG System account.

Or click here to go directly to your profile: My Profile

Once in your profile simply change your account Nickname, change your Display Name to the Nickname, and save the changes.

Important Note: Use your Username to log in to AtomicRPG.com. Not your Nickname.

Compared to iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch), Android does things differently. The first tap immediately follows the link, even on menu items with dropdowns. To open a dropdown, it requires a swipe that starts on the menu item and ends off of it. This is best approximated by a downward swipe.
