Supernatural’s Sam and Dean Winchester in the Atomic RPG System

The TV show Supernatural was recently a main focus of MALCon (Myths and Legends Convention) in Denver. So for MALCon I found the perfect opportunity to create my versions of some of the main characters of the popular CW show, Supernatural.

Supernaturals Good Guys aka PCs

For this I am considering them to be of fairly high level. They are going on 11 seasons now and have dealt with a ton of challenges. They are not maxed out though because I always like to leave characters room to grow. So we will be setting all of these characters at level 15. Click on the name if you want to look at the character sheets along with the explanations.

Dean Winchester

Dean Winchester

I built Dean as he appeared in season 10 with the Mark of Cain and with the main purpose of doing lots of damage very quickly. He will be a Combatant and Devoted. This way he will have access to lots of combat-related effects for his Powers. Being Devoted will give him a large amount of Power Points to spend on his few Powers. He was quite troubled and very quick to anger. This is why I thought being an Aggressor would fit the best.

  • Archetype: Combatant
  • Style: Aggressor
  • Focus: Devoted

It can sometimes seem difficult to figure out what kind of equipment or gear you want to have for a character. For modern-day characters, it seem like even more of a challenge because they don’t have obvious items like full plate armor or swords. So I used the coat he usually wears, and I made the First Blade and the Mark of Cain as items for Dean. The Mark is a scar, so not something you’d generally think of as an item, but that is the freedom of the Atomic RPG System! I also wanted to give him a little “side gear”, so we can use the fake FBI badge they always use.

  • Army Coat of the Hunter
  • Dean’s Fake FBI Badge
  • Mark of Cain
  • The First Blade

Then we will round out Dean with a few roleplay entries and notes to help those who may not be familiar with Supernatural.

Sam Winchester

Sam Winchester

Sam will be built as I perceived him in season 10 of Supernatural as well. I saw him as less of a Hunter and more from the “Men of Letters” perspective. He was more of a researcher/problem solver than a monster killer. So I think making him a Focused Mystic would be great for his abilities on Supernatural. He will be Mind based with some combat and some utility-based effects he can access. Being Focused, he will not have Powers that are as strong as Dean’s, but he’ll have more of them. This will give Sam more versatility to fit various situations. Since he is definitely focused on protecting Dean during season 10 of Supernatural, I will make him a Protector.

  • Archetype: Mystic
  • Style: Protector
  • Focus: Focused

His gear will be along the same idea as Dean. He has his usual coat he wears along with a blade he always carries. I loved the idea of the fake FBI badge so I gave Sam one as well. Then to reinforce his role as a researcher, I created his laptop.

  • Fake FBI Badge
  • Sam’s Laptop
  • Ruby’s Knife
  • Sam’s Carhart Jacket of Confidence

Then I will polish Sam off with a few RP entries and notes to help players who don’t know Sam from Supernatural so they have an idea of his role in a group.

Bobby Singer

Bobby Singer

Yes Bobby is dead in Season 10 of Supernatural but he shouldn’t be! He was such a great character he should never have been killed off. So I am bringing him back (that’s part of the fun of the Atomic RPG System–doing things your way)! Bobby was always there for the Winchester boys. He was always patching them up, giving them advice, and helping those idjits out of jams. His character will do the same thing. So we will need to make Bobby a Generalist for lots of buffs and healing. I’m going give him a Balanced Focus so he will have lots of Powers to choose from in all three Disciplines. I will also make him Neutral so he has a build bonus for his Skills instead of combat abilities.

  • Archetype: Generalist
  • Style: Neutral
  • Focus: Balanced

His gear was lots of fun. For characters like Bobby it is easy, just think about the items or props around them that stand out. When you think about Bobby he’s usually wearing his hat and his vest. He has his trusty pistol and at the end of a hard day, the bottle of whiskey.

  • Dirty Trucker Hat
  • Trusty Vest of Defense
  • Peacemaker Colt Single Action Revolver
  • Hunter’s Helper

Last but not least are a few notes in the roleplaying section about how Bobby became a father figure for Sam and Dean Winchester when their own father was killed.

Castiel

Castiel

Castiel will be the last of the player characters we will put together for our Supernatural group. Castiel is something of a character of extremes. Sometimes he is very offensive and destroys demons. Other times he is healing those on the brink of death. Making him a Devoted Mystic will cover both of these. He will be good at Damage and Healing, but not have a lot of utility abilities. Since he spends most of his time protecting Sam and Dean I will make him a protector.

  • Archetype: Mystic
  • Style: Protector
  • Focus: Devoted

Some of the items that come to mind for Castiel are his trench coat and his angel blade. These are pretty obvious and are must-haves for Castiel. His angel wings are another notable feature, even though they are not seen all the time, and will make a great addition to his items. Lastly, I love his necktie that is thin, worn out, and always looks like it is about to fall off. This will make another great item for Castiel.

  • Angel Blade
  • Trench Coat of the Angel
  • Wings of Divinity
  • Celestial Necktie

Then we will just throw in a few roleplay notes.

Supernatural Bad Guys aka NPCs

The bad guys are also going to be built at a base of level 15. However, it is important to note that very powerful NPCs such as bosses (Tier 5) like Crowley have a higher level than the Sam and Dean and the rest of the players.

Crowley

Crowley

As any fan of Supernatural knows Crowley is the show’s meanest and most recurring enemy of Sam and Dean Winchester. Though he helps them out, he always has his own motives. Crowley is a complicated character and makes a fantastic NPC boss. Since Crowley isn’t overtly offensive, I thought it would be a cool twist to make him a Mystic Protector. This gives him the ability to do all of the supernatural things he does while being able to deal some serious damage or heal himself after he is done playing. Being focused allows his Mystic Powers to be strong but also gives him the flexibility to handle whatever Sam and Dean can throw at him.

  • Archetype: Mystic
  • Style: Protector
  • Focus: Focused

As an NPC, Crowley doesn’t have any specific items. As a GM you can give him some, however normal NPCs don’t have items. Instead they have GM mods to quickly and easily give them the strengths and weaknesses to match the GM’s vision.

The real flavor for Crowley comes from his Powers. He has a few more than other bosses but this gives him the flexibility to do what he wants and to handle any situation.

  • Begone With You: Tosses around enemies at his whim.
  • Consumed By Hellfire: Sets an enemy on fire.
  • Good As New: Grants him lots of Healing.
  • Snap My Finger, Snap Your Neck: Does lots of damage to an enemy.

I will also give Crowley a few GM Mods so he fits into what we have come to know of Crowley. He is hard to damage, wounds he receives are easily regenerated, and he is acutely aware of his surroundings.

  • Heals all Wounds: Recovery +25
  • Not Easily Damaged: Resistance +25
  • Super Senses: Perception +15

Then I finished by adding a few entries from the wikis so GMs know just how messed up his backstory is and why Crowley is so good at being the King of Hell.

Abaddon

Abaddon

Abaddon was one of the few characters strong enough to challenge Crowley. I thought she would make a great Champion tier NPC for our Supernatural PCs. She was definitely unstable and loved to kill. Thinking about some of her abilities on Supernatural, it seems to make the most sense to make her an Aggressive Mystic. I want her to be versatile so I will make her Focused.

  • Archetype: Mystic
  • Style: Aggressor
  • Focus: Focused

Since she is an NPC I am not going to bother with items. Instead, I will put her flair into the Powers she will use against them.

  • Art of Murder: Damages the enemy over time.
  • Seeing Red: Damages the enemy for entire encounter and reduces Attack.
  • Dramatic Exit: Does damage, tosses enemy, and teleports away.

Since she is described as being nearly indestructible, I will also give her a couple of GM Mods to make her a little nastier than a normal Champion NPC.

  • Very Hard To Kill: Recovery +25
  • Very Tough: Resistance +25

Then we will add a little bit to the roleplay to make sure Abaddon is ready to be played by someone who doesn’t know about Supernatural.

Black-Eyed Demon

Black-Eyed Demon

It just wouldn’t be Supernatural without the demons. Specifically, the Black-Eyed Demons. These are the ground troops of evil and used by a good number of the bad guys in Supernatural. More importantly, they always seem tougher than they should be so I am going to make them Specialists. I think most of what they do will fit nicely into a Combatant Aggressor. Let’s make them focused so they have decent Defenses and can switch between an OK Combatant or Mystic basic attack so they can smack around almost any PC.

  • Archetype: Combatant
  • Style: Aggressor
  • Focus: Focused

They may or may not have any number of items but for the ease of the game I am not going to worry about them. Instead, let’s just make sure we have a few of their standard abilities created in their Powers.

  • Demonic Pulse: Moves enemies and damages them.
  • Toying With Your Target: Reduces Speed, Defenses, Attack for a short time.
  • Neck Twist: Does lots of Damage.

We’ll add a few notes in the RP section saying that Black-Eyed Demons take over human bodies so they can look like anyone. This way the GM can sneak them near the group. Then a few things about demons so we can make sure the GM plays them evil enough.

Hell Hound

Hell Hound

Hell Hounds are not as well known but super scary when they do make appearances on Supernatural. They fit a very specific lore for the show but I think that role can be expanded for a Supernatural Atomic RPG System game. They are not too tough per say. What makes them formidable is that they are unseen by everyone except who they are after. Since they are so narrowly focused I am going to make the Hell Hound a Combatant Aggressor who is Devoted.

  • Archetype: Combatant
  • Style: Aggressor
  • Focus: Devoted

Since the Hell Hound is an NPC I am not going to bother with items. Their attacks are pretty straight forward but I want them to go unseen.

  • Disappear From Sight: Increases Subterfuge.
  • Panic and Fear: Reduces target’s Perception.
  • Hellish Mauling: Does lots of damage to target.

To bolster their stealth ability a little more, I will also give them a couple of GM Mods so they are very good at sneaking around.

  • +6 to Athletics, Subterfuge, and Perception
  • +6 Speed

Shapeshifter

Shapeshifter

These are the weakest and some of the most prolific of Supernatural’s monster bad guys. They offer little challenge for experienced hunters like Sam and Dean. So let’s make them the weakest of NPCs in the Atomic RPG System, Minions. Since Shifters want to blend in and avoid fights, let’s make them Neutral for the Skill boost. Then we can make them Combatants who are Focused for the ease of the stats. This way they may be able to do something before they are killed.

  • Archetype: Combatant
  • Style: Neutral
  • Focus: Focused

It is not worthwhile to have any items on the Minion Shifters unless it is a story-driven item. Plus, they don’t do much but blend in which is more of a Skill they really only have one Power to speak of, their strength.

  • Superhuman Strength: Does Damage.

Then like the Black-Eyed Demons, I will mention in the RP section that they can look like anyone. That’s all we need for these NPCs.

Much of the information and research was gathered from the two wikis below which are full of great Supernatural information. Besides using my own fan knowledge these sources really helped me expand and spell out the characters so they really fit the ones you will find on the Supernatural TV show.
